        <text>     When you have selected a folder to AutoRename and have chosen a Base Name, click the Begin button to start the process of renaming.  Once clicked the computer will begin to rename all the files located inside the selected folder to the Base Name with a number like:

ScreenDump4

     The original files could have been named anything, but AutoRename will go through the whole folder (not including enclosed folders) and rename all the documents for easier systematic listing.</text>

     When a computer lists files according to the alphabet, it searches like we do when looking up words in a dictionary:  begin with the first letter, match up the first letters, then second, and so on.  We forget that to a computer, this would be the actual "alphabetical" order for the following:

     The problem is that "Filename50" should go way after the list, but when the computer just looks letter-by-letter instead of the "logical" way.  To solve this problem, Use Leading Zero makes it so the computer will always list accurately.  Look at the same list as above, only with leading zeros:

Filename07
Filename50

     The reason for this is as stated above, it allows the computer to sort correctly according to the numerical order.  This feature will look at the number  of files to rename and then chooses the amount of leading zeros that would be appropriate.</span></text>

        <text>   If you are not going to use this for the renaming of Internet files or for cross-platform preperation, then File Extentions are not necessary.  You may click the Ignore File Extention button and it will remove any File Extentions and will rename entire file names according to the Base Name and the number.
     File Extentions, if you don't know, are the three or four letters following the "." in a file name.

Example:    filename.gif
                                         ^-------- the ".gif" is the extention

     If you are not familiar with these it is probably because on a Macintosh® computer they are unnecessary.  The Macintosh® remembers file types based on their File Type code and their File Creator Code.  An internet file must, however, contain a file extention for it to be a certain file.  This is because when an Internet browser retrieves files from the Internet, it must know what type of file it is in order to process it (i.g. display a picture file, show the text of a document, save it to disk for decompression, etc.).   Without getting into too much about why, just understand that it is necessary to have File extentions on the Internet, but not on just the Macintosh® computer.  This feature is intended to prepare files without the need of extentions.

Example:  If the Base Name was "Picture" then the list would look like this:

NOTE:  This list was created without File Extentions.

     When selecting a Base Name, note that it should be a name the doesn't already exist.  If it does exist (with a number) then this program could skip it and in turn may skip several others.  In other words, if the folder contains "pict1.gif" and you are going to make your base word "pict", this program will not be able to rename it, also it may skip other documents.  The best way to avoid this error is to rename all files a name that you are sure doesn't exist, then rename them the prefered name.  Only do this if there is a file already named the prefered base name and a number like in the example.</text>

        <text>    If you are planning to rename the files for use on the Internet, such as uploading many JPEG files to your Homepage for use on the Internet, then you would want to be sure that every JPEG file included the necessary .jpg File Extention before you upload.
     Simply type in a Base Name, click the Force *.* pop-up menu, select .jpg from the menu, and click begin.

NOTE:  When Forcing File Extentions make very sure that every file to be renamed is a file of the Forced file Extention.  If a file is supposed to be a .jpg for use on the internet it would not work on a browser if it were to be renamed .txt or some other extention.  Only the Macintosh® computers do not require this sort of FIle Extention in order to process files correctly.

    This Application was created using Claris HyperCard 2.4.  It was made for my brother who needed an application that would rename files in a folder with a sequential name so that he could incorportate lists of graphics on his website.  That is the reason for development.  I decided to release it to the public so that anyone could enjoy the features.
